According to the sources, The Indian government has taken a decision to shutdown over 300 private engineering from the 2018-19 academic session. The Engineering colleges where less than 30 percent Enrollment had happened for five consecutive years are in 100% shutdown category. According to a senior HRD official, we are scanning another more than 500 engineering colleges who are not being able to fill up seats.
The All India Council for Technical Education has given instructions, either they have to shut down or convert to science colleges or vocational education institutions. As per AICTE official website, there are more than 3,000 private engineering colleges offering undergraduate courses in engineering, with an intake capacity of 13.56 lakh. Of these, 800 colleges are getting less than 50% enrolments and over 150 have less than 20% enrolment.
According to the chairperson Professor Anil D Sahasrabudhe of the the council, AICTE has already asked those engineering colleges with less than 30% enrolment to work out on alternate options. He also said “We are thinking on the issue. we can close these colleges, but this decision could also lead to many complications as they have invested money, have bank loans. After taking a holistic view, those colleges which are on border line cases may not be asked to shut down but they will be asked to choose alternate options on their own. It is in the interest of the institutions to convert into other types of institutes, as over time their admissions have suffered because they were not performing well.”
The AICTE would give them an options like converting their engineering colleges to science colleges, skill development centres or vocational education centre. The matter will be finalised by end of December 2017 before the approvals are issued to the colleges.
