President-elect Donald Trump has promised that he will deport about 3 million immigrants with criminal records from the United States of America. He said that he will take steps to deport people who are living here illegally and with legal status. Donald Trump’s stance on immigrants was a major part of his campaign. It will require a large number of federal immigration force to hunt them and send them out of the country.
Speaking on the CBS program, “60 minutes”, Donald Trump said he has plans to deport undocumented immigrants immediately. Trump addressed the immigrants with a softer tone than he used in the election campaign when he called many of them criminals and rapists. He called them “terrific people”. However, he said he will deal with them only after the border is secured and criminals deported.
When asked about whether he will look to deport millions of undocumented immigrants, Trump replied that his priority will be to get rid of criminals and those with criminal records. He said that there are a lot of gang members and drug dealers who are living here illegaly. He will force them out of the country or will put them in jail. He told that the number of such people could be ut to 2 to 3 million. He said once the border is secure, the immigration officers will determine the fate of remaining undocumented immigrants.
He backed his claim of building an actual wall on the US-Mexico border. It was another strong point of his election campaign. Now the possibilities of building a wall on the border have set in. He said that some areas on the border will be fenced and for some areas wall will be appropriate. But the Mexico government has openly said that they will not pay for the wall.
There are about 11 million estimated illegal immigrants living in the United States.
As of 2012, Obama administration had estimated that there are about 1.9 million criminal immigrants in the country. This includes people who have green cards for permanent residency and also those with temporary visas. The list includes those who are convicted of non violent crimes as well as those of gang-related violence and serious crimes.
In most of the cases, the convicts have to go through immigration courts. Only then they can be deported. It can take many months before a deportation order is received due to huge backlogs. It is a lengthy process. There are thousands of criminal immigrants in jail who cannot be curtailed under the current law.
About 8,20,000 criminal immigrants are living illegally in the country according to Migration Policy Institute in Washington.
Barack Obama government had made over 2.5 million deportations.
Average cost of each deportation- $12,500
About 521,000 cases are pending in federal immigration court.
88,128 criminal immigrants are with pending immigration orders.
Obama government had protected more than 741,000 immigrants from deportation.
