Violence erupted in Panchkula, Haryana after the court found Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh guilty of raping two female followers in 2002. As soon as the verdict was out, the supporters of the self-proclaimed guru who had already threatened of dire consequences if the decision of the court went against Ram Rahim started creating chaos.
According to the reports, at least 12 people were dead in the violent clashes and more than 70 others were seriously injured. The supporters of Ram Rahim also targeted public places. They put two railway stations, petrol pumps and a power grid in Haryana.
There had been some serious tension in the states of Haryana, Delhi, and Punjab since two days following the news of the anticipated verdict in Ram Rahim case. There were reports of violent incidents in Delhi also. In the area of Anand Vihar, the rioters burned a train and also put two buses on fire.
Even the media persons were not spared. Many staff members from many prestigious news channels were also attacked by the reporters.
The government has taken precautionary measures to prevent any violent incident but it seems that they were not fully prepared. The government had deployed 600 army personals in Haryana along with heavy police protection to control the rioters. But over 1,00,000 supporters had gathered in support of Ram Rahim and they went mad as soon as the verdict came out.
The rioters who were waiting outside the court and as soon as the news about the verdict spread out, they broke down the barricades created the police and started pelting stones. Many vehicles were damaged including those of media persons.
Ram Rahim was flown out of the court by helicopter. He was taken to Rohtak where the authorities will put him behind the bars. The court will announce the sentence for his crimes on Monday. Ram Rahim could face a minimum of 7 years and a maximum of 10 years in jail.
The security forces used tear gas, water cannons and lathis to control the mad mob. There were reports that they even fired gun shots in the air but the numbers game proved too hard to handle. The government has tightened security on metro stations in Delhi following the unpleasant attacks.
Meanwhile, the Chief Minister of Punjab, Captain Amarinder Singh and Chief Minister of Delhi Arvind Kejriwal had appealed the people to maintain peace.
